As a Patch editor, my online audience relied primarily on social media traffic. Via regular training, Patch taught its editors the latest social media best practices for generating page views, interaction and shares among our social audience via our individual site's social media accounts.
The social media audiences connected to my original Patch site, Kent Patch, grew exponentially during my tenure as editor. This growth, which reached the top tier among Patch's qualifications for social media audience size on Facebook and Twitter, occurred solely through my own promotion and social networking.
Today, as a part-time journalism instructor at Kent State University, I teach my students these core social media practices, which focus on creative and site-specific (such as Facebook or Twitter) headlines, intriguing photography, reader interaction and SEO value.
